Our last week here!!
Well, here we are, our last week at Crescent Beach and RV park near Port Angeles. We decided to take a little drive, yesterday, and check out a few places that we hadn't yet visited and also share some photos from our past few months of working here.
We decided to visit the little museum in Joyce, WA just up the road from us about 2 miles or so.
One of the things on display was the photo, above, of where the Crescent Beach and RV park now sits. It used to be a port and a logging site. Very interesting to read about.
Here is some information I found. http://www.ghosttowns.com/states/wa/portcrescent.html
We also saw some really neat artifacts and this old truck, that our Granddaughter enjoyed sitting in.
She got to come and stay with us for the last week or so of our stay here. We've had a lot of fun!!!
She enjoyed walking on the beach
AND, collecting shells!! I told her she didn't have to pick up EVERY one she saw.
We didn't see any airplanes arriving or departing and in fact there were just a few cars sitting in the parking lot. We were told by locals that there really isn't any international flights coming and going anymore.....but you can read this article for yourself.

Another side trip we took, yesterday, was to the Elwah interpretive center. We only walked down one trail, but we did check out the displays. We didn't get any photos here.
Yesterday, was a fun day!!
MEMORIES!!! Here are some highlights of our stay here:
One of the other side trips we have taken since we have been here, was to the farthest western point in the US,called Cape Flattery. We took Hwy 112 all the way there, but I wouldn't recommend it in a 5th wheel. We just drove our truck. Although, we did see a few apparently managing it, we also saw one broke down and it made getting around them really tight. It was too curvy and narrow for this gal.
The above photo was one of the more calm parts of the winding road. :-)
We decided NOT to come back that way, but took Hwy 112 to Hwy 113 and then to 101. It was a much nicer road and we eventually went around Lake Crescent (nothing to do with where we are currently staying) and on back to 101. It was a long, long drive back.....time wise, because of construction on the road and only one lane of traffic. So, we had to stop many times and wait for oncoming traffic.
But, the views were gorgeous!!!
We did get a GREAT burger and fries on the way back at Hungry Bear Cafe in Beaver, WA. If you happen to be on that road, you will love their fries and we also got two pieces of cherry pie, to go, and they were HUGE!!!
We also visited Sequim, WA. one day, walked along the downtown area and visited the shops. That's a nice little touristy town if you haven't been there before and we also learned that it is in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains and so they see less rain than other parts of the Olympic Peninsula. A great place for seniors to retire, evidently. They also have the Lavendar Festival there every July.
In July, two of my friends, DeeAnn and Penny drove up to Sequim for a couple of days and the three of us stayed at a motel and enjoyed a couple of days of wandering around Sequim and catching up!! It was so good to see them!!! I can't believe that I didn't get a photo of the 3 of us together.
Since being here at Crescent Beach, we have had a lot of different experiences....and, we have learned a lot!!!
And......
We have been able to watch ships go up and down the Strait.
We have viewed some awesome sunsets.
Some cool shots of the sun and the moon!
We've been bitten by more than our share of mosquitoes. I've been able to walk the beach and collect shells and rocks. We've fallen asleep to the sound of the crashing of the waves just less than 200 feet from our RV. No need for a sound machine, here. :-)
I've gotten in a LOT of steps not only working but on my days off, as well, and have lost some weight. :-)
The weather has been cool for the most part here in this area, not going over 70 most days and more like in the 60's for the most part. We've experienced a lot of fog, had to put up with smoke from B.C. for over two weeks and also had some gorgeous sunny clear days. But, I wouldn't want to stay here in the winter months. Just saying!
This was our spot at the RV park, right next to the bathrooms and laundry facilities.
The first photo, below, is of the bathrooms before they were finished being painted. They used to be green and gray, when we first arrived.. The second photo is after they were finished. The Woman's bathroom sign still needs to be painted, but Tom will probably finish that after Labor Day. I think he did a great job. David and I painted another side of the building.
David and I at work. (Of course "I" am taking the photos) Cleaning fire pits and picnic tables.
Policing the beach.
Burying dead seals and fish
Cleaning two cabins

Annie and her first look at Crescent Beach. She enjoyed being on the beach, but the walk TO the beach proved to be really hard on her in the soft sandy trails.
Our first trip back into Port Angeles, we saw a ship right smack dab in front of us in the harbor.
Our first trip up to Joyce, WA using the back road. It's narrow and I wouldn't want to drive a 5th wheel up or down this road....although quite a few RVers miss the turn off on 112 on Camp Hayden Road and they DO end up coming down this way.
On one of our first days off, we went to the Dungeness Wildlife refuge. This was the path through the wooded area.
The overlook
This was the same spit we could see from up on Hurricane Ridge on another trip, later on.
Fourth of July fireworks at Crescent Beach RV
And, the fire department showing up at midnight because of a careless person setting fireworks off towards the grassy area in front of the RV park. That's the front of our RV in the foreground, to the left.
Fog on the beach can be eerie at times.

One of the four paths to the beach from the RV park
This one is what we call the 'boardwalk' as it is right across the street from the office and instead of a sandy walk, you walk on boards.
Dan and Kathy's dog, Mylee. Dan and Kathy are one of the other 5 workamper couples here). Such a sweetheart and anytime she was outside, I had to go over and give her some lovin.
Stay tuned!!!
Sorry this was so long.....but I was on a roll with so many memories..... :-) And, I didn't realize I repeated myself on some of the photos.....chalk it up to old age :-)
Have a great day!!

Nice pictures... beautiful sunsets.. and lots of green and trees (which I miss here in Madras)!!!!! Love the views of the water and the big ships. Sounds like you've been very busy. I must say I even miss the fog and rain! Am curious as to where you go next. Maybe you'll head south again, to warmer climes. I do love the Washington coast.. it is so rough and rugged in places... and Sequim... what an amazing place in that it gets so little rain. Take care and thank you for the updates! Marilyn
ReplyDeleteThat was my favorite thing about being here, the Strait and watching all the ships navigate up and down it. We didn't get much rain here but we sure got the fog and wind. I'll be updating as soon as we reach our next destination!!! :-)
