A tour of Pineywoods Baptist Campground

Image
Today, I am sharing a video made by our friends, Herb and Kathy, after visiting us here at Pineywoods and getting the 'tour'. We met them back in November when we pulled into the Escapee park in Livingston, TX.  We had the space across from them, and they and a couple other campers came over to help David back into the trees.  After a long, long drive that day, we were so happy to be stopped for a few days.   We arrived on Thanksgiving, fully meaning to be there in time for the big Thanksgiving dinner but, it was a lot longer drive than we had anticipated, especially getting around San Antonio and Houston. We were able to go have left overs, the next day, with them and a lot of other RVers.   Before we headed out for our VCB job, we each traded our 'business' cards....and we kept up with their travels via their blog. When we heard that they were back in Livingston for a couple of weeks, I contacted them to see if we might be able to go ...

On the job with VCB

Celebrating our wonderful Annie's 14th birthday, today!!! Now onto my blog post for today!! We have been at Pineywoods baptist camp volunteering since the 3rd week of January up to the present. I thought I would show you some of the work the guys were doing on the newest lodge that is being built.  I waited till the job was almost finished (or the part VCB and TBM played) so that you could see the progress made. The first two weeks, that we were here at Pineywoods, I was down sick with the flu so I missed taking a lot of photos.  But, you'll get the a gist of what goes on here. Some of the first jobs David was given to do, was sand, router and poly boards that would go on the insides of the dorms.  Since I was still sick, I didn't get photos of those. When I was finally able to get out and about, he was routing bed parts for the 28 bunk beds that would go in the dorms.  Here they are assembling the bunk bed frames. And, a photo of t...

Crossing Bridges, not my thing!!

Image
This morning, I woke up at 3am and when I do that, I often jump online and Google a lot of different things I am interested in or have questions about. I have been thinking, lately, of all the bridges we crossed over on our trip to Florida, this past December, and found out that we went over 3 of the top 10 longest bridges in the US.  Of course, I didn't know that THEN!!  Believe me, we went over a lot more bridges on that trip....but the following were three of those on the list of the top 10. First on the list was the Bonnet Carre Spillway in St Charles, LA.  These photos were taken from the Internet.  The day we went across, it was foggy.  This was 11 miles long. Then, there was the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge on I-10 between Lafayette and Baton Rouge.  It was 18.2 miles long. Next was the Jubilee Parkway in Mobile, Alabama, which was 10 miles long.   It was foggy the day we crossed over and so I wasn't able to see too ...

While I wait!!

I have another post in the making, but I have to wait until David can be here to explain to me what the guys are doing in the photos I took ;-)  I would attempt to describe what they are doing, but I know I would definitely get something wrong. So, in the meantime, I thought I would tell you what we've been up to.  Basically, not much!!! :-)  We are almost always busy doing something, but nothing interesting to post on a blog. We did take a little drive to Lufkin, TX two Saturdays ago so I could get a much needed haircut.  We stopped at Home Depot to pick up some little washers for a card I hope to make in the next couple of weeks and we went to a little hamburger drive in called Ray's.  The beautician recommended it to us.       I am going to have to say that this hamburger was better than Whattaburger!!!  And, the fun of it was that we could eat in our truck...so we didn't have to leave Annie out in the hot truck.  AND, ...

Crockett, Texas "Paradise in the Pines"

Image
Crockett is about 40 miles from where we are staying at our current volunteer job with VCB.  We had gone there once to pick up a prescription and get a few groceries but didn't venture down to the actual town. I always have to look up the history of the town or what it’s known for or how it got it’s name….and of course things to do and see there.  Here is what I found: The town was named after David  Crockett  who reportedly had camped nearby on his way to the Alamo; the site was very near the Old San Antonio Road. A family from Tennessee donated the land for the town and named it after  Crockett , whom they had previously known. We, also pass through Groveton, on our way to Crockett to get groceries.  A week or two ago, on our way to Crockett, we passed a field where they had some guys in civil war uniforms.    We didn’t know what was going on till we got home and I Googled it….and found out they were enacting the battle of blackjack...

Still hanging out here at camp

Image
Well, we are still here, at the camp, and are enjoying our stay!!  (well, except for the thunderstorms). Today, though, it's clear blue skies and 71 degrees.  When there were more people here, the Wi Fi was touch and go so I wasn't able to get online for a long enough time, so that I could update my blog. And, to be totally honest...we haven't done anything really all that exciting or interesting to share! The staff here are just wonderful!!!   They wave and say HI as they drive past in their ATV's and golf carts or when they see you walk into the dining hall or office.  And, they are so willing to help you out if you have a question or need something. Oh how I wish I could have a big stamping retreat here.....this place is just such a wonderful campground and the couples/family cabins are places that I could actually LIVE....they are so nice.  The dorms are nice, too, with like 8-10 sets of bunk beds and showers and bathrooms.  Here is one c...
